Attractions

The area is golfer heaven with Thunder Bay Resort just 10 minutes away and the beautiful Elk Ridge Golf Course in Atlanta, 25 minutes away. Thunder Bay Resort breeds their own elk herd on their grounds and you can go for the sleigh ride and elk viewing with a gourmet dinner afterward. It's a fabulous experience!

Agawa Canyon Train
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontairo. Travel 114 miles through Canadian wilderness for great fall and winter vistas. In summer, the train stops for two hours in a wilderness park for hikes.

AuSable River Canoe Trips
23 mile wilderness stretch of the AuSable river in the Huron National Forest has been designated a National Scenic River. Average depth is 3 feet or less, great for family canoeing

Luzerne Boardwalk
A scenic walkway through unspoiled native habitat, full of wildlife. Scenic and interesting in all seasons.

Jesse Besser Museum
Located in Alpena with exhibits in art, history and science. Permanent exhibits include the Gallery of Man, lumbering, farming, Avenue of Shops, fossils, and historic buildings. Also, visit the Sky Theatre Planetarium. Seven days a week. Small admission fee.

Old Presque Isle Lighthouse and Museum
Built in 1840. Replaced by new light one mile to the North in 1870. Climb the hand-hewn stone steps for a panoramic view. Ring the 3,400 pound bronze warning bell. Lake Huron never looked so beautiful! The new light is the tallest on the Great Lakes, located in a 100 acre park with trails.

Kirtland Warbler Tours
In Mio. Tours run from May 15 to July 3 at the US Forest Service office. See and hear the very rare songbird on a guided tour.

AuSable Queen
Take a ride on this restored paddle-wheeler and relive the days when the river was the primary mode of transport in the Northwoods. The Huron National Forest is beautiful!

Ocqueoc Falls
A quiet walk in the wild splendor leads you to this restful and soothing waterfall. Gentle enough for leisure wading.
